Sunshine Cathedral has campuses in Fort Lauderdale, Jamaica, and soon in Miami. We are a Metropolitan Community Church affiliated with the Center for Progressive Christianity. We are a progressive, inclusive church open to all people. Everyone is welcome regardless of theological background, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age, or ability.
On Thursday, May 29th, there was an initial gathering of those interested in forwarding the Sunshine Cathedral (Miami). Sunshine Cathedral's pastor, the Reverend Durrell Watkins wrote the following review:
Dear Friends,
What a wonderful gathering we had last night in Miami! 50 of us gathered for the first Sunshine Cathedral-Miami Project meeting. I want to thank Michael Diaz for all the hard work he did in organizing a very successful event. I also want to thank the leaders of Sunshine Cathedral who supported the event with their presence last night. And finally, but most importantly, I want to thank everyone who attended; the event was for you and you made it special by showing up for it.
I stated last night that our purpose in the Miami area isn’t to create a new MCC, nor to emulate any existing church. We are simply offering who we are, the Sunshine Cathedral, to the Miami area. Hopefully, you picked up an information booklet last night and a Spirit & Truth magazine. Those items will help you understand better who we are and what we are offering. Additionally, you will be receiving the electronic version of our newsletter, The SunBurst, each week. That, too, should help you get to know us. And, of course, you can always visit our website (www.sunshinecathedral.org) to read articles, make prayer requests, ask questions, watch sermons, and further explore the Sunshine Cathedral experience.
I told you last night about our experience in Jamaica and how well that has worked out. My hope is that we will have similar stories to tell of lives empowered and enriched in Miami because we have chosen to work together to provide a progressive, positive, and practical worship experience in the area. Of course there are good churches in Miami already, but there is always room for another outreach venue to affirm the sacred worth and dignity of all people. We are pleased to offer ourselves as such a venue.
Finally, I remind you that Sunshine Cathedral is a Metropolitan Community Church affiliated with The Center for Progressive Christianity. We pride ourselves on being Progressive, Positive, and Practical. That is the lens through we which we view Christianity and that is the channel through which we offer ministry. We are glad to be one church that is learning to meet and thrive in multiple locations.
